Self Representation Presentation – Lone Fathers Association – Child Custody

Tags : , , , , , , , , , ,

dadsLONE FATHERS ASSOCIATION of AUSTRALIA (LFAA), a national Peak Body, is a non-sexist, non-sectarian, non-profit, and self-help educational and welfare organisation devoted to the interests of lone fathers, their relatives, friends, extended family, grand parents, carers and children.

LFAA will provide a presentation of how to represent yourself in family court proceedings. The presentation is the latest 2012 version of their ‘Getting Started’ Presentation which has been shown to many groups over the years. Presentation duration is approximately 1.5 hours and there will be a Q & A session afterwards.

LFAA has been operating for 39 years with its head office in Canberra and branches through out Australia.

The increase in the number of male suicides related to family issues, the increase in the number of children who can not see their dad – primarily due to non enforcement orders, the call for assistance, advice and support from lone fathers in the Sydney area has now led to a Sydney branch being established.

Our vision is to assist and encourage parents who have, or desire to have, shared parenting status or care of their children to support and sustain their children in a happy and viable family unit, and to help parents without shared parenting status to maintain adequate, positive contact with their children.

free-legal-advice-for-womenJess didn’t have a plan when she left her violent partner in the middle of the night.

She grabbed their two-month-old son and a few belongings and drove to her parent’s house, unsure of what would happen tomorrow or what her next move should be.

‘‘Perhaps if I’d had that information earlier, before things reached a crisis point, perhaps I would have made the decision to leave earlier,’’ said Jess, whose name has been changed.

‘‘I was terrified. I was afraid that he would escalate the situation when I left.’’

Jess was aided by the police and the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre, which is hosting a series of legal information sessions to educate women considering leaving a difficult relationship.

Topics include victims compensation (tomorrow), family law and children (April 24), family law and property settlements (May 1) and domestic violence and Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (May 8).

Help for Penrith fathers going through divorce or separation

Tags : , , , , , , , , , ,

Barry-Williams-Child-Custody-Divorced-FathersFOR almost 40 years, Barry Williams has helped Australian families through the murky waters of divorce and separation.

The national president and founder of Lone Fathers Association of Australia (LFAA) became the first father under the Family Law Act of 1975 to win custody of his four small children after his wife walked out on the family.

In those days, no support was available to single fathers, so Mr Williams staged a hunger strike at Parliament House for five days.

The then prime minister, Malcolm Fraser, agreed to meet him and ended up changing the single mother’s benefit to the single parent’s benefit.

Mr Williams and his organisation have been championing single parents’ rights ever since.

Free Family Law legal advice at Community Justice Clinic

Tags : , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NSW Attorney General the Hon. John Hatzistergos with law students, offering free legal adviceWhen faced with troubling legal problems, sometimes it’s just about knowing where to turn. The University of Western Sydney’s Parramatta Community Justice Clinic initiative is helping the most vulnerable in our community with free legal advice and support when they most need it.

Located in the heart of the Parramatta Justice Precinct, the Parramatta Community Justice Clinic (PCJC) is run by UWS law students under the close supervision of practicing solicitors from Macquarie Legal Centre and is primarily utilised by disadvantaged members of the community who cannot afford legal representation.

Clients can choose to make appointments or simply drop-in to the PCJC, where the law students are available to assist on civil, criminal and family law matters ranging from traffic offences and motor vehicle accidents, home building and neighbourhood disputes, to family breakdown, divorce and child support.

Students also assist clients with the often daunting administrative side of the law – helping them to understand and complete the legal paperwork and helping them with court preparation – as well as providing referrals to other external legal services.

Since it first opened its doors in November 2009, the PCJC has seen some 135 students working in the Clinic, many of whom continue to help out on a volunteer basis.

UWS Vice Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, says the PCJC initiative is another example of the University’s commitment to ‘Bring Knowledge to Life’ for the people of the Greater Western Sydney region.

“It is fitting that we are launching the PCJC during Law Week, as it reminds us how important it is to have fair and free access to legal services and representation for all members of the community, regardless of their educational, socio-economic, or cultural backgrounds,” says Professor Reid.

…to assist on civil, criminal and family law matters ranging from traffic offences …to family breakdown, divorce and child support.

“Working in the PCJC also gives our law students an invaluable learning experience – allowing many of them to work with clients for the first time in a context which gives the principles of fairness and social justice which they have studied a human face.

“One of the greatest strengths of the UWS School of Law is its active commitment to socially-just legal practice, and the way in which it challenges our students to serve their communities with commitment, fairness and empathy.

“The real-life experience our students gain from working in the PCJC not only prepares them for the rigours and realities of the legal profession, but is an opportunity to help those in our community who would otherwise be left on the margins of the social institutions in Australian society meant to provide fairness and justice for all.”

is primarily utilised by disadvantaged members of the community who cannot afford legal representation.

The PCJC is an initiative of the University of Western Sydney in partnership with the NSW Department of Justice and Attorney General, Macquarie Legal Centre and Parramatta City Council. It is also strongly supported by members of the Parramatta and Greater Western Sydney legal profession, local businesses and community groups.

Funding for the initiative has been provided by the Federal Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations through its Diversity and Structural Adjustment Fund.
